Pere Goriot Nobody writes about money like Balzac, and his classic chronicle of a young man from the provinces clawing his way to success in 19th century Paris, even as an older man is victimized by the same milieu, shrewdly captures the financial dimension of so much that goes on between people. The boarding... Read more

Lost Illusions "Balzac [was] the master unequalled in the art of painting humanity as it exists in modern society," wrote George Sand. "He searched and dared everything."

Colonel Chabert The story of a French military hero of the Napoleonic Wars, long assumed to be dead, tries to recover his fortune and former wife through the help of a famous Parisian lawyer.   Eugenie Grandet A reader from Tel Aviv, Israel I have read Eguenie Grandet and ever since then i have developed an unsatiable omnivorous Balzac appetite. Few years have passed since i read 'La Pierre gouriot' (which i found quite boring at the time. when i was 15). and today i find balzac to be one of the most heart-rending authors i have ever read. The true compassion one feels for his herorines is unchallenged - thanks god Balzac wrote 97 finished novels. Also, the descriptions in this book are no doubt of the best descriptions ever written, filled with warmth and poetry. Balzac gives us realism but his realism is filled with warmth, the compassion the characters sometimes lack is being compensated by the readers compassion. To read Eugenie Grandet is to know what compassion is!
