Prey: A Novel By Michael Crichton

  • Prey: A Novel
    By Michael Crichton from HarperCollins.
In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles -- micro-robots -- has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive. It has been programmed as a predator. It is evolving swiftly, becoming more deadly with each passing hour.

Every attempt to destroy it has failed. And we are the prey. As fresh as today's headlines, Michael Crichton's most compelling novel yet tells the story of a mechanical plague and the desperate efforts of a handful of scientists to stop it. Drawing on up-to-the-minute scientific fact, Prey takes us into the emerging realms of nanotechnology and artificial distributed intelligence-in a story of breathtaking suspense. Prey is a novel you can't put down. Because time is running out.

    Customer Reviews

I absolutely love Michael Crichton books, and have read almost all of them. He is smart and technical and creative; what's not to like?? While Prey was very entertaining, its premise has such a severe disconnect that it took some of the fun out of it for me. We are taught in Prey, that a man-made...

  • Timeline
By Michael Crichton from Ballantine Books.
Michael Crichton's new novel opens on the threshold of the twenty-first century. It is a world of exploding advances on the frontiers of technology. Information moves instantly between two points, without wires or networks. Computers are built from single molecules. Any moment of the past can be actualized -- and a group of historians can enter, literally, life in fourteenth-century feudal France. Imagine the risks of such a journey.

Not since Jurassic Park has Michael Crichton given us such a magnificent adventure. Here, he combines a science of the future -- the emerging field of quantum technology -- with the complex realities of the medieval past. In a heart-stopping narrative, Timeline carries us into a realm of unexpected suspense and danger, overturning our most basic ideas of what is possible.

    Customer Reviews

Timeline was a very enjoyable read (took me 4 days to finish it and I was in Rio - 50 steps from the beach!). The author cleverly explains the mechanics and theories behind time travel and I really, really liked the way the book went back and forth from historical times to modern era. There are some...

  • The Andromeda Strain
By Michael Crichton from Ballantine Books.

    Customer Reviews

Michael Crichton, a very popular author from where I'm from, is very talented and skilled.

The Adromeda Strain is a book about a virus-like slime, and how it almost takes over the world.

Overall, it's a VERY good book.

  • Eaters of the Dead
By Michael Crichton from Ballantine Books.

    Customer Reviews

Even after hearing Michael Crichton's commentary on the abridged audio version of this book, I was left wondering just how much is true and how much is embellishment. Apparently, the narrator, Ibn Fadlan, was real enough and did travel to the Northlands around the time period when this novel is set,...

  • Sphere
By Michael Crichton from Ballantine Books.
A group of American scientists are rushed to a huge vessel that has been discovered resting on the ocean floor in the middle of the South Pacific. What they find defines their imaginations and mocks their attempts at logical explanation. It is a spaceship of phenomenal dimensions, apparently, undamaged by its fall from the sky. And, most startling, it appears to be at least three hundred years old....

    Customer Reviews

This is my fav book EVER! It is about 4 scientists who go investigate an alien space ship. Some VERY important things go wrong but Im not the kind to give away endings or, if you put it that was beginnings or mids either. OK so my point is this:

  • The Terminal Man
By Michael Crichton from Ballantine Books.

    Customer Reviews

This is probably the best book I have ever read. I found only a few dull parts in the book. Most of it was exciting or very interesting. This is definetly one book that you should try.

  • Travels
By Michael Crichton from Harperperennial Library.
“Often I feel I go to some distant region of the world to be reminded of who I really am. ”
When Michael Crichton -- a Harvard-trained physician, bestselling novelist, and successful movie director -- began to feel isolated in his own life, he decided to widen his horizons. He tracked wild animals in the jungles of Rwanda. He climbed Kilimanjaro and Mayan pyramids. He trekked across a landslide in Pakistan. He swam amid sharks in Tahiti.

Fueled by a powerful curiosity and the need to see, feel, and hear firsthand and close-up, Michael Crichton has experienced adventures as compelling as those he created in his books and films. These adventures -- both physical and spiritual -- are recorded here in Travels, Crichton's most astonishing and personal work.

    Customer Reviews

I read this book in college after I had read a few of his books, mostly because every other day a new movie was being adapted from them, so I thought I might give them a try. Crichton is an entertaining storyteller, much like John Grisham, but after a while the plots begin to feel formulaic and...

  • The Great Train Robbery
    By Michael Crichton from Avon.
Lavish wealth and appalling poverty live side by side in Victorian London -- and Edward Pierce easily navigates both worlds. Rich, handsome, and ingenious, he charms the city's most prominent citizens even as he plots the crime of his century -- the daring theft of a fortune in gold. But even Pierce could not predict the consequences of an extraordinary robbery that targets the pride of England's industrial era: the mighty steam locomotive. Based on remarkable fact, and alive with the gripping suspense, surprise, and authenticity that are his trademark, Michael Crichton's classic adventure is a breathtaking thrill-ride that races along tracks of steel at breakneck speed.

    Customer Reviews

I read TGTR back my sophomore year in HS- almost 4 years ago. And even today, I find myself recommending this book to all my friends who haven't read it.

Pierce is one of the greatest, most alluring anti-heroes I've ever encountered. His ability to plan, his patience, his genius seems to seep from...

  • Jurassic Park
By Michael Crichton from Ballantine Books.

    Customer Reviews

Although I'm a huge fan of the feature film made from this book, the film does not do the book justice. As is usually the case, the book is usually better than the movie. Even if you've already seen the movie, you've got to read the book...it's one of Michael Crichton's best!

  • Airframe
By Michael Crichton from Ballantine Books.
Three passengers are dead. Fifty-six are injured. The interior cabin virtually destroyed. But the pilot manages to land the plane. . . . At a moment when the issue of safety and death in the skies is paramount in the public mind, a lethal midair disaster aboard a commercial twin-jet airliner bound from Hong Kong to Denver triggers a pressured and frantic investigation. AIRFRAME is nonstop reading: the extraordinary mixture of super suspense and authentic information on a subject of compelling interest that has been a Crichton landmark since The Andromeda Strain.

    Customer Reviews

This book was absolutely fantastic. I loved it from beginning to end. I checked the book out, and was done with it later that same day, you just can't put it down. It is written from a day to day point, and you just have to see what happens the next day. After reading this book I became interested...

The legendary ruins of the Lost City of Zinj have seen an eight-person field exhibition die. After startling discoveries, a new expedition is sent back into the Congo--its mission, to descend into the secret world where the only way back out may be through the grisliest death....

    Customer Reviews

Congo is Michael Crichton's exploration of the interaction between humans and other primates and between civilization and the jungle.

    Customer Reviews

I honestly couldn't stop reading "Disclosure" once I started it -- I always wanted to know what would happen next; and unlike "Timeline" (which I also couldn't stop reading), it didn't read like a movie script. In "Disclosure", we get Crichton's usual background information regarding topics the...

  • Rising Sun
By Michael Crichton from Ballantine Books.
During the grand opening celebration of the new American headquarters of an immense Japanese conglomerate, the dead body of a beautiful woman is found. The investigation begins, and immediately becomes a headlong chase through a twisting maze of industrial intrigue and a violent business battle that takes no prisoners.

    Customer Reviews

This book is a great crime story that beats CSI and Law and Order. But it seems Crichton has run out of ideas. The whole "Japan taking over America" caution takes away significantly from the action.

  • The Lost World
By Michael Crichton from Ballantine Books.
It is now six years since the secret disaster at Jurassic Park, six years since the extraordinary dream of science and imagination came to a crashing end--the dinosaurs destroyed, the park dismantled, the island indefinitely closed to the public.

    Customer Reviews

I've just finished this and its a good read. Not Crichton's best by any means, but nonetheless a good book. I like the way that it links with Jurassic Park but actually uses a different set of characters (apart from Ian Malcolm). It did annoy me a bit that Malcolm was in the novel since he was...

  • The Michael Crichton Collection: Jurassic Park/the Lost World/the Andromeda Strain (The Michael Crichton Collection)
By Michael Crichton from Bantam Books-Audio.

    Customer Reviews

It has been said that 'Jurassic Park' is one of Crichton's best books (if not THE best) and I agree. An absolutely amazing work of original fiction which is written to near perfection. The movie was ripped to shreds by many fans of the novel for having 1-dimensional characters, but you cannot say...

    By Michael Crichton from Knopf.
An astonishing technique for recovering and cloning dinosaur DNA has been discovered. Creatures once extinct now roam Jurassic Park, soon-to-be opened as a theme park. Until something goes wrong...and science proves a dangerous toy....

    Customer Reviews

Michael Crichton's popular Jurassic Park novels that spawned two blockbuster motion pictures are together, uncut and unabridged, in this spectacular book. If you liked either one of the Steven Spielberg films, this is definitely a must-have, both as companion for the films and for its literary...

  • Michael Crichton: Two Complete Novels: Disclosure, Rising Sun
By Michael Crichton from Wings Pr.

    Customer Reviews

This omnibus contains two excellent and controversial masterpieces of suspense. Rising Sun is a great crime mystery, and also shines light on the business tactics of the Japanese, albeit with a bit of paranoia. It may seem ironic now, since the Japanese economy is NOT what it used to be, but it is...

Dr. Roger McPherson, head of the prestigious Neuropsychiatric Research Unit at University Hospital in Los Angeles, is convinced he can cure Benson through a procedure called Stage Three. Description of The Andromeda Strain - The United States government stands warned that sterilization procedures for returning space probes may be inadequate to guarantee uncontaminated re-entry to the atmosphere. When a probe satellite falls to the earth two years later, and lands in a desolate area of northeastern Arizona, the bodies that lie heaped and flung across the ground, have faces locked in frozen surprise. The terror has begun....

    Customer Reviews

Obviously, this is a collection of three MC books, so you know you are getting three good books. BUT, they are not his three best books. The Andromeda Strain is great, one of his best. The Terminal Man is good, but sub-par for him. Congo is a classic thriller but not one of his absolute best either....
